Maureen cared for my husband, who had frontotemporal dementia, for 2 1/2 years. She kept
track of his appointments and drove us to them. She oversaw his diet and made a protein
smoothie for him (us) every day. She took him for a walk every day, first with a walker, then a
rollator, then a wheelchair. As his condition worsened, his ability to communicate declined, but
Maureen is very intuitive and could usually "read" his needs and figure out what he was trying to
say.
In addition to keeping him clean and dry, she devised an exercise program for him and
made it fun. She challenged him mentally, playing card games, working crossword puzzles and
reading to him. As his condition declined, she altered his activities. They played thumb wars,
he folded the washcloths, she helped him try to spin a coin, try to whistle and - most engrossing
of all - she gave him knotted shoestrings to untie. This caregiver thinks outside the box! And
she loves what she is doing. She truly found her calling.
During her time with us, she became a sister to me. In addition to caring for Richard, she would
toss in a load of laundry, or vacuum, or make a casserole, or order the groceries. She kept the
bathrooms spotless. She even reminded me of my appointments and to take my pills. We
came to love her so much we would watch the front door and have a countdown, waiting for her
arrival each morning.

Maureen is a true care giver! She always comes on time or early. She completes all the tasks on the client's plan. When she has"extra" time, she would ask if there were any household tasks that she could help me do.
Maureen cares about her clients and makes them feel comfortable.

Maureen started here a year ago, and she and Jerry, who has Parkinsons and progressive dementia have developed a close relationship. Maureen does typical caregiving - medication monitoring, companionship, light housekeeping, etc. but also so much more. The thing I am most grateful for is that she makes him laugh and smile (very unusual for him!) every time she's here.
She practices his voice and physical exercises with him. He reports "she knows when I'm not trying" but her positive attitude is contagious and she gets him to participate. She makes sure he gets out for fresh air each visit. Jerry states Maureen "gives good advice". They do crossword puzzles, brain trivia, they found a card game, play ping pong. Mind you all these activities have to be at Jerry's level. Maybe it's so successful because she had been a teacher. Even took him to see a sunflower farm. I've never met a person more patient, kind, and perceptive to someone's ever changing needs before.
Ultimately she's been able to help Jerry believe in himself and feel good about himself. I have no doubt working with Maureen has improved his physical as well as emotional being. She's improved his quality of live. And thereby improved mine. In addition, Maureen's been a shoulder to cry on, someone to bounce ideas off of, someone to laugh with. All while maintaining professionalism and boundaries. Not to mention she can cook very well, has no hesitation in doing deep cleaning, even raking leaves!
Lastly, my cats like her!
